Although the weather took a weird turn, this year’s Sunnyhill Celebrity Golf Tournament on April 28 was a big success. It seems the big draw was the “Big Red.” Nine former NFL players, most of them St. Louis Cardinals, participated in the tournament and teamed up with our sponsors to make a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities. The roster included Jim Hart, Irv Goode, Willard Harrell, Terry Miller, Johnny Roland, Mike Ross, Tim VanGalder and Roger Wehrli.
Beautiful Sunset Country Club was the location, and the tournament was sold out. The celebrities gave the day appeal, but those shining stars would never have been there if it hadn’t been for the hard work of members of the Sunnyhill Golf Committee. Ziad Rubaie of Essex Dental Benefits along with Rich Klassen of Delta Dental and chairman of the committee made the network happen. In fact, all the golf committee members did their part to make the day a success.
There were new golfers, larger commitments and a growing awareness about Sunnyhill and the work we do. In fact, Delta Dental became our leading donor for this year’s event as a “Super Bowl Sponsor.”
As everyone gathered to begin lunch though, the sky turned black, the wind began to blow and a torrential rain sent caterers scurrying. With the help of Sunnyhill employees, however, the f ood was moved indoors and lunch was only shortly delayed. The timing couldn’t have been better. Just as golfers were gearing up to go, the rain stopped. It remained a blustery and cold day out on the course though. Still, our foursomes seemed to have a great time.
The auction also went well. Items featured included a week’s stay in beautiful St. John in the Virgin Islands, sports memorabilia, a classic car for a day and lots of wonderful tickets to Cardinal baseball games.
All in all, when every thing was said and done about $55,000 was raised for Sunnyhill. Thanks to all who contributed their time, money and talent to make the tournament a success.
