Sunnyhill is a not-for-profit organization established in 1978 that provides residential support, recreation and educational opportunities for children and adults with developmental and other disabilities throughout the Greater St. Louis Area and surrounding counties.
Residential services are community based and promote a persons dreams and independence. Accessible recreation opportunities are available at our 65 acre adventure camp in Jefferson County or through our On the Road Adventures program.
Sunnyhill, Inc. provides tailored residential, recreational and educational opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities. In partnership with community and natural supports, Sunnyhill empowers people to become productive citizens and achieve their own dreams.
Sunnyhill, formerly the Council for Extended Care, was founded in 1978 by eighteen Missouri Families who wanted to create a world of opportunity for their children with developmental disabilities.
In 1980, the organization opened Sunnyhill Adventures, one of the country's first all-inclusive recreational camps for adults and children with developmental disabilities in Dittmer, Missouri.
In 1986, Sunnyhill opened their first residential home to provide individualized supported living for those affected with developmental disabilities in the St. Louis Area.
In 1998, Sunnyhill Adventures On the Road Travel Program was introduced, allowing people the opportunity to visit places like, Branson, Nashville, Memphis, and many other locations.
In 2009, Sunnyhill launched Sunnyhill University, designed to give children and adults with disabilities valuable life skills including support to venture out of their homes, information about their communities, socialization, and the benefits of a productive lifestyle. Sunnyhill U creates an environment that fosters interests, creativity, confidence, independence, and dignity all while teaching people how to be active members of society.
In 2011, Sunnyhill began offering Behavioral Support Services, which are designed to teach adaptive skills to replace previously learned unsafe behaviors.
Then, in 2015, Sunnyhill opened the Independence Center in DeSoto, situated on 18-beautiful acres. At this location, Sunnyhill introduced the Family Resource and Advocacy Center, the first of its kind in the state, giving families an opportunity to reach out for support in one convenient location.
Annually, Sunnyhill serves over 1,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities and provides both full-time and part-time care to people living in residential homes or in their own homes. None of this would be possible without the love and support of our volunteers, donors, and staff.
Watch us grow again in creating a world of opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.
