Matt: I am a Cardinal’s Fan
Matt began his residential care with Sunnyhill with hopes for a new start. The transition wasn’t easy; his early years were marked by severe behaviors that kept him isolated, limiting his access to community activities and opportunities for connection. Despite the supportive environment, the hurdles Matt faced seemed insurmountable.
A turning point arrived when Matt’s began to receive Sunnyhill’s ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) Supports service. With the expert guidance of one of Sunnyhill’s Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) and a team of dedicated Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), a plan was put in motion to help Matt overcome his challenges. This support went beyond just managing behavior—it offered Matt real hope and the possibility of empowerment.
Determined to reclaim his life, Matt set a bold goal: to attend a St. Louis Cardinals home game and indulge in his favorite stadium foods. This goal became the centerpiece of a personalized token economy system, rewarding Matt for positive progress and effort. Each token earned brought him closer to his dream, making every step forward tangible and motivating.
After months of perseverance, Matt finally achieved his goal, enjoying the thrill of the game, the taste of classic ballpark food, and the joy of being part of the crowd as the Cardinals claimed victory. Surrounded by cheers and companionship, Matt experienced firsthand the impact of inclusion and community participation.
Matt’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of structured supports, teamwork, and personal determination. Once hindered by adversity, he now stands as a symbol of resilience, illuminating the path toward empowerment for others in similar circumstances. Through perseverance, compassionate support, and strategic interventions, Matt’s life was changed. His victory inspires us all: with the right help, the path to independence and joy becomes possible for everyone.
